Looking at the best businesses over the last millennium we have compiled a list of the top 10 business of the last Millennium in no particular order.

1. Google

Google was originally developed in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both completing their PhD’s at Stanford University in California.

Prior to Google conventional search engines ranked pages by counting the number of  times the search terms appeared on the page, Page and Brin came up with a better system that analyzed the relationships between websites.  They called this new technology PageRank, where they found that a website’s relevance was determined by the number of pages a website had, and the importance of those pages, that linked back to the original site.

The domain name for Google was registered on September 15, 1997, and the company was incorporated on September 4, 1998.

According to reports in May 2011, the amount of unique visitors of Google surpassed the 1 billion mark for the first time, which was a 8.4 percent increase from the year before with 931 million unique visitors.

2. Amazon

Amazon was founded in 1995. The company began as an online bookstore. Their aim was to be able to provide an online bookstore that had many more titles than could be found in bookstores and by mail order. According to Ann Byers (2006). Jeff Bezos: the founder of Amazon.com, The Rosen Publishing Group. ‘Bezos wanted a name for his company that began with “A” so that it would appear early in alphabetic order. He began looking through the dictionary and settled on “Amazon” because it was a place that was “exotic and different” and it was the river he considered the biggest in the world, as he hoped his company would be.

3. eBay Inc.

eBay Inc. is an American internet consumer-to-consumer corporation that manages eBay.com, an online auction and shopping website that enables people and businesses to buy and sell a variety of goods and services worldwide. eBay was founded in 1995, and  is one of the notable success stories of the dot-com revolution; it is now a multi billion dollar business with operations found  in over thirty countries.

4. McDonald’s

McDonald’s Corporation is the world’s largest chain of hamburger and fast food restaurants, it has been reported than they serve around 64 million customers daily in 119 countries.

McDonald’s is primarily known for selling hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken, french fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, shakes and desserts. But due to a change in consumer tastes and life styles, the company expanded its menu to include salads, wraps, smoothies and fruit.

5. Facebook

Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.  All new visitors and users must register before using the site, they then may create a personal profile, adding other users as friends, and exchange messages, including sending automatic notifications when they update their profile.

6. Nike

Nike, Inc. is a major sportswear and equipment supplier based in the United States. It is the world’s leading supplier of athletic shoes and clothes and a major manufacturer of sports equipment. The company was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports and officially became Nike, Inc. on May 30, 1978. Nike has sponsored many high profile athletes and sports teams around the world, with the highly recognized trademarks of “Just do it” and the Swoosh logo.

7.Apple Inc.

Apple Inc. formerly known as Apple Computer, Inc. is an American multinational corporation that designs and sells electronics, computer software, and personal computers. The company is  best-known for its products such as the Macintosh line of computers, the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Apple has also created software including the Mac OS X operating system; the iTunes media browser; the Safari web browser.

8. Walmart

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has been known as Walmart since 2008 and was known as Wal-Mart before then. Walmart is an American multinational retail corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. Walmart was founded by Sam Walton in 1962, and was incorporated on October 31, 1969. Walmart has 8,500 stores in 15 countries, under 55 different names.

9. Microsoft

Microsoft Corporation is an American company manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of products and services predominantly related to computing through its various product divisions. Microsoft has dominated the office suite market with Microsoft Office and in recent years Mircorsoft has broadened into the video game industry creating Xbox and later Xbox 360.

10. Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola is a carbonated soft drink that is sold in stores, restaurants, and vending machines in more than 200 countries. It is often referred to simply as Coke. Originally planned as a patent medicine when it was invented, Coca-Cola was bought out by businessman Asa Griggs Candler, who led Coke to its dominance of the soft-drink market throughout the world throughout the 20th century.

The Coca-Cola Company has, also introduced other cola drinks under the Coke brand name. The most common being Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Cherry, Coca-Cola Zero, Coca-Cola Vanilla amongst many others.

Based on Interbrand’s best global brand 2011, Coca-Cola was the world’s most valuable brand.

What may have become obvious looking through the list is the amount of online business that have become successful. Wonder why that is?
